Sponsors of Jessica’s Law urge
Californians to vote yes on Proposition 85, too
1.2 million
California households get phone calls asking: “Vote yes on 83 and 85”
The authors of
Jessica’s Law are urging those who support strengthening laws against child
predators in California to vote yes on a companion ballot measure – Proposition
85, the Parents’ Right to Know & Child Protection Initiative.
Assemblywoman Sharon
Runner and her husband, state Senator George Runner, both of Antelope Valley,
say they “strongly endorse” Proposition 85. The Runners wrote Proposition 83,
which would strengthen California laws against those who prey on children.
“We all want to
protect our children,” said Assemblywoman Sharon Runner in a taped telephone
message sent to 1.2 million California households on Friday. “My husband and I
wrote Proposition 83 – Jessica’s Law. We want to stop child predators and
protect our kids. That’s why we strongly endorse both Proposition 83 –
Jessica’s Law – and Proposition 85 – the Parents’ Right to Know Initiative.
Please vote yes on 83 to stop child predators and 85 to protect our children.”
If adopted,
Proposition 85 would require that a doctor notify a parent or guardian of a
minor at least 48 hours before performing an abortion on her. Under current
California law, a girl as young as 12 can be taken from school for an abortion
without her parents even knowing. Child predators are taking advantage of this
situation to cover up their crimes, including statutory rape.
Both propositions will
go before voters in the Nov. 7 general election.
